Life and Test Match

Life is like a cricket test match. The batsman needs to  build up his innings slowly & steadily. After the toss is settled, the opening batsman is sent in to start the innings. The initial overs of the day, like initial days when the baby is born are extremely tough and one to tread them with caution. The fast bowlers(diseases/accidents) are ready to strike at the smallest mistake and you can lose the wicket(life) just by small mistake.

Once the initial few overs are taken care of, then wicket(life) becomes little easy, the batsman can venture out little freely and can punish few careless deliveries. This is akin to a young kid who starts becoming mischievous and starts takes risks during games. They go around climbing trees, swimming in the lakes, cycling or taking their parents bikes/cars out. This is the phase if you are lucky you might pass through with some minor scars here and there but if you are unlucky you might scars for life. If the batsman survives this session, then he has a chance to make it big.

The next phase is where the batsman needs to the hard work, spend time in the middle, keep  patience, look for opportunities and keep scoring. This is the phase when the core of the innings is really built up. This also shows the real character of the player, whether he has in it for the big innings or he is a T20 player. The opposition will try to test his skill by throwing their best at him. If he is fortunate, he might get a very good partner at the opposite end, else he has to play the role of anchor and steady the innings. In life also, this is the phase where the young person starts his life as an adult. He/She starts earning and starts taking more responsibilities. Many new challenges/opportunities will be thrown at you. Life can get or appear to get  little boring at this phase but this is the most crucial phase of life. This is the foundation on which rests the next phase of life. He/She might get support at the other end in form of a partner or family but its important that one goes on even if there is very little support from others.

There are some batsman who are little selfish and their goal is to hit a century and get their names on the record books. Once they get to that mark, they become careless and then get out. Then there are some who just don't care about hitting a century, they go on to hit triple/double centuries. These are the guys who are really focused and and are aware of the bigger objective of the team. Their innings are remembered for ever by their team mates and they bring in success to their teams.

In life we have many who manage to live in their 80s/90s also, but they don't have purpose to their lives. They don't live but exist on this planet. There are others who understand the purpose of their lives is to live for others.  These people bring meaning to their lives by helping others and these are the ones who will be remembered with love and affection long after they have played their innings and they always remain NOT OUT.

Abide with Me

A beautiful poem written by Henry Francis Lyte / Will Henry Monk

Abide with me, fast falls the eventide
The darkness deepens Lord, with me abide

When other helpers fail and comforts flee
Help of the helpless, oh, abide with me

Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day
Earth's joys grow dim, its glories pass away
Change and decay in all around I see
O Thou who changest not, abide with me

I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless
Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness
Where is death's sting?
Where, grave, thy victory?
I triumph still, if Thou abide with me

Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes
Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies
Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee
In life, in death, o Lord, abide with me
Abide with me, abide with me
